"Ashes to Ashes" is a song by David Bowie that was originally released on his album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) in 1980. From 23 August to 30 August 1980, it was the UK number one single. It has been covered by several artists. In 2008, the title of the song was given to the BBC television series Ashes to Ashes, similar to the use of an earlier Bowie song for its predecessor series.

The Video[]

The music video of "Ashes to Ashes" featured Bowie dressed up as a Pierrot clown alongside several members of the Blitz Club including Steve Strange. The Pierrot costume that Bowie dressed up as would later represent the character of "The Clown" in Ashes to Ashes, who would haunt DI Alex Drake in Series 1.

In Ashes to Ashes[]

In 2008, when Alex Drake was in the presence of Arthur Layton, Layton mocked Drake by singing the lyrics of the song though she was unaware of its true meaning at this point. In 1981, during a nightmare, Drake awoke to "Ashes to Ashes" before discovering the clown inside her cupboard which woke her up (A2A Series 1: Episode 1). The song would not appear again until the series 1 finale. The car bomb that would kill Tim and Caroline Price was activated using a tape cassette of "Ashes to Ashes". (A2A Series 1: Episode 8)
