La chica de ayer

From Life on Mars Wiki

The cast of La chica de ayer

La chica de ayer is the Spanish remake of the British TV series Life on Mars, starring Ernesto Alterio as Samuel Santos (Sam Tyler), expected to air in 2009. Spanish television network Antena 3 bought the rights from the BBC, and will remake the show and base the first series 5 years later than the U.K version, in 1978 post-Franco Spain. The title comes from a 1980 Spanish song "La Chica de Ayer" by Nacha Pop.

Curiously, the song playing on Sam's iPod as he was hit by the car was neither "Life On Mars" (unfamiliar to the average Spaniard), nor "La chica de ayer" (which was of course not yet recorded in 1978) but Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody".

[edit] Development

Mercedes Gamero, Antena 3's head of acquisitions, spoke to The Times about the changes in the Spanish show: “We need to move the series forward to 1978 to recreate the characters. For example, no women were allowed in the police force under Franco. Under Franco, the police were seen as an important arm of the political regime. By 1978 there was a new openness in Spain which would have been challenging to some members of the police. There was a culture of machismo among Spanish men which has changed a lot.”[1]
