Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher (more commonly known as Margaret Thatcher) was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and leader of the Conversative Party from 1975 to 1990. She is mostly remembered for being the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and for her involvement in the Falklands War in 1982. Though Prime Minister Thatcher was a character in neither Life on Mars or Ashes to Ashes, she was referenced several times throughout the five series. Supporters of Thatcher and her policies are known as Thatcherites.

References in Life on Mars/Ashes to AshesEdit

  • In Series 1, Episode 5 of Life on Mars, DCI Gene Hunt says "There will never be a woman Prime Minister as long as I have a hole in my arse!". He would regret saying this when Margaret Thatcher became PM in 1979.
  • In Episode 2 of Series 2, Sam Tyler says to a struggling DSU Harry Woolf that when Margaret Thatcher becomes Prime Minister, many of Britain's police officers will turn to alcohol. The dying Woolf responds to this by saying, "If Margaret Thatcher becomes Prime Minister, I will be on something a lot stronger than alcohol".
  • In Series 2, Episode 3 when WDC Cartwright argues that if a woman ran the country and she couldn't do as badly as what some male leaders have done, Sam responds by saying, "I've got a feeling you might regret saying that one day". This is an obvious reference to Margaret Thatcher.
  • In Episode 2 of Series 1 of Ashes to Ashes, Danny Moore, a member on the board of the London Docklands Development Corporation is targeted by David Bonds and his anarchist son George. He is also a Thatcherite (a supporter of Thatcher).
  • In the following episode, Alex becomes heavily inebriated when she begins to flirt and sleep with a man that is "not her type". When sober, she later assumes he is a Thatcherite.
  • The impact of the Falklands War is a recurring theme in Series 2 of Ashes to Ashes.
  • In Episode 3 of Series 3 of Ashes to Ashes, the episode is set during the 1983 General Election. Near the beginning of the episode, there is a political montage with Margaret Thatcher, the Conservative Party and the Labour Party.
  • The 12 year-old graffiti artist Barney Wright in the same episode graffitied "Maggie Thatcher - Milk Snatcher" in response to the abolition of free milk in schools.
