Mars is the fourth planet in the Solar System and the succeeding planet to Earth. In March 2035, after months of preparation and travelling, the Hyde 1-2-5 spacecraft containing Sam Tyler, Major Tom Tyler, Colonel Annie Norris, Ray Carling and Chris Skelton landed on the planet to search for genetic data to find cures for diseases such as cancer.

For many years, there has been speculation whether there is, was or could realistically have been life on Mars. In 1971, artist David Bowie later used the title of the speculation in his future single which would in turn inspire the television series and its remakes.
