The seventh episode of the second series of the British science fiction police procedural drama series Ashes to Ashes was broadcast by BBC One on 1st June 2009.
Synopsis[]
What looks like a simple drugs drop at a building site turns into a murder case when CID find a body buried in concrete. Alex is convinced that she's nearer to home, but with a huge obstacle in the way, just how far will she go to carve a path back to her daughter? As her view of the world is shaken to its core, for Gene the case uncovers a terrifying truth about someone he trusts.
Cultural references[]
- Gene says, "This a stake-out, not a pillow fight at Malory Towers," referencing the fictional sea-side female boarding school in Cornwall created by Enid Blyton in her Malory Towers series of books (1946-1951).
- The Polish builders are a subtle reference to the UK film Moonlighting released in September 1982, about a team of Polish builders working illegally in London in the early 80s during the Solidarity protests in Poland. It was written and directed by Jerzy Skomlimowski.
- Gene says, "Been playing Plaster Casters with her husband." This is a reference to Denys Fisher's complete sculpting and painting sets from 1972. Each set contained a small mallet and chisel and three "blocks" of stone on plinths. The blocks were in fact wax or plaster moulded around plastic figures; the mallet and chisel were used to chip away the wax or plaster to reveal the plastic figures beneath. There were originally three different sets: Tom and Jerry, The Flintstones, and Animals. These sets were in fact called "Chip Away", but Alex Toys has in recent years used the name "Plaster Casters" for a dissimilar product.
- Dr Zhivago is mentioned.
